1. Hoover Reservoir
One of the most popular lakes in Ohio, Hoover Reservoir is a particularly good place to fish for catfish and White Bass. There are plenty of places to fish along the shores of the reservoir, and fishing from the various docks and pontoons along the banks where there is lots of cover for the fish can yield very good results. Otherwise, one of the most peaceful experiences on offer can be fishing from a boat, although do be aware there is a horsepower limit of 10 HP on boat engines.
2. Antrim Park
Located on 5800 Olentangy River Road in Northwest Columbus, this 120-acre lake has excellent fishing along its banks or the large dock, which is fully wheelchair accessible, but unfortunately, no boats are allowed on the lake. The Olentangy Greenway Trail runs along the side of the lake, which is stocked yearly with rainbow trout.
3. Alum Creek Lake
Known as one of the best fishing lakes in the state, Alum Creek Lake, located in the state park of the same name, is an excellent place to fish for largemouth bass and channel catfish, both of which are abundant in the lake. Muskie and saugeye are also common targets for anglers. The banks are covered in thick vegetation, which can make it difficult to find a good spot to fish from them, but ice fishing is popular in the winter months, Look out for rocks, timber, and jutting bluffs which provide the main cover for sport fish.
4. Buckeye Lake
This shallow 2,800-acre lake located to the east of Columbus often yields good amounts of bass, both large and smallmouth, as well as hybrid stripers. There are also plenty of saugeye and catfish to be found here. While there are again few places to fish from along the banks, it is possible to rent boats from the marinas along the shore. Kayak fishing is particularly successful along the rocky shoreline.
5. Deer Creek Lake
This small lake south of Columbus is located in the state park of the same name and is full of perfect places to fish along its 15 miles of banks. Aside from the native populations of bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie, there are great fisheries of the artificially stocked saugeye and white bass. As there is no horsepower limit for boats on the lake, it can get a little busy at times, but fishing from small boats is well worth the trouble.
