What's New for the 2018 Toyota Prius Prime?
The Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid is unchanged for model year 2018, so we'll take a look at its many great features. It is a plug-in hybrid that you connect to an electric charging station to refresh the batteries. Prius Prime offers an electric-only driving range of 25 miles, and excellent hybrid fuel economy. Prius Prime looks great and costs less than the standard Prius after tax incentives.
Performance
The powertrain consists of a 4-cylinder 1.8-liter gasoline engine mated to two electric motors that put out a total of 76 kW. The combined powerplant produces 121 horsepower and returns 133 mpg in EV mode and 55 city/53 highway mpg in hybrid mode. The Prime has an EPA-estimated total driving range of 640 miles. The Prius Prime battery pack stores 8.8 kWh of charge that will support an electric-only range of 25 miles at speeds as high as 84 mph. It takes about two hours to recharge Prius Prime using a 240V electric charging station or five hours at a standard outlet.
Appearance
Prius Prime is a smart-looking hatchback with sleek multi-lens LED headlights. The LED horizontal taillights and grille treatment are unique, as is the hatch made from carbon fiber. The four-seat cabin has a split rear bench with a center console. Traditional Prius-style gauges are located at the top of the dash, and higher trim levels boast an 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen.
Safety
Prius Prime comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense P, which includes full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams and pre-collision with pedestrian detection. Also standard on Prius Prime are three years of roadside assistance and a rearview camera. Available features include a color head-up display, backup sensors with parking assist, and blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
