2019 Toyota Prius vs 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Serving Dublin, OH

While the Prius might have been one of the original hybrid vehicles on the road, the Camry hybrid may be one of the coolest. In 2019, it's safe to say that the Prius still has its original cult following of consumers looking for a safe and practical vehicle that maximizes gas mileage. However, the addition of an all-wheel-drive system this year is slated to expand the Prius's consumer base. But now, there's another good option for a Toyota hybrid in 2019: the Camry. Although not traditionally electric, how does it compare to the Prius?

Performance

Among all of the hybrid vehicles on the market, the Prius still takes the lead for fuel economy. This year, there is one standard engine in all trim levels of the Prius. It is a 1.8L, four-cylinder engine with 16 valves and intelligent valve timing. The engine has three modes that either provide or conserve power as needed. At a maximum, the engine produces 96 HP at 5,200 RPM and 105 LB-FT at 3,600 RPM. Newly available for the Prius is an on-demand electronic all-wheel-drive system that provides extra power to the rear wheels when extra traction is needed. The 5kW electric motor in the rear produces 71 HP and 120 LB-FT of torque. It has a maximum voltage of 600V.

The 2019 Camry hybrid has two gasoline engines across the lineup. One is a four-cylinder 2.5L engine with 16 valves. This engine has a maximum power capacity of 203 HP at 6,600 RPM. Its top torque capacity is 184 LB-FT at 5,000 RPM. The second is a 2.5L, four-cylinder with three driving modes. This engine creates up to 176 HP at 5,700 RPM and 163 LB-FT at 5,200 RPM. The electric motor that simultaneously powers the Camry hybrid is the same for all three trims, which is an 88 kW motor that creates up to 118 HP and 149 LB-FT of torque. Its maximum voltage capacity is 650V.

Appearance

The Prius's appearance this year is more athletic, sculpted, and rugged than before, which is a fitting look for its more durable all-wheel-drive system. Contributing to the Prius's bold appearance are highly visible LED lighting elements across the front, including LED light bulbs and LED fog lights on select trims. LED stop lights and tail lights are standard in the rear of all models, while accent LED lights are available. An active grille shutter adds to the 2019 Prius's athletic look. Its wheel sizes range from 15 inches to 17 inches. The 2019 Camry has a wide front grille, bold LED headlights, daytime running lights, and combination rear LED. Rocker panels and color-keyed outer mirrors with integrated blind-spot monitoring and turn signals give it a sporty look. Its standard wheel sizes range from 16 to 18 inches, and it gets a rear spoiler in the back.

Features

Inside, the Prius has a 6.1-inch screen with available navigation. The Camry has a standard seven-inch screen on the lower trims and an eight-inch screen on the higher trims. Navigation and an enhanced audio system are optional. Fabric-trimmed seats, split-folding seats, and a driver's display screen are standard on the Prius, while heated seats are offered on select trims. Dual-zone AC, a backup camera, and either cloth-trimmed or leather seats are standard on the Camry. Both vehicles are equipped with Toyota's cutting-edge Safety Sense driver-assist package.

If you're looking for a hybrid vehicle in 2019, both the Prius and Camry are great options. The Prius gets more durable this year with the addition of all-wheel drive, while the Camry offers abundant amenities and power.
